Dr. Charles F. Grammes, 89, died on Monday, December 7, 2020 at Inova Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church, VA. He was the husband of the late Deloris E. (Herman) Grammes who died on March 28, 2020. The couple wed on June 1, 1957. Born on March 5, 1931 in York, he was a son of the late Louis F. and Louise (Crider) Grammes. He was a graduate of William Penn Senior High School, York, PA, Franklin and Marshall College, Lancaster, PA, and Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia. His postgraduate medical training included an internship at WellSpan/York Hospital and residency in internal medicine and fellowship in endocrinology at Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, OH. His 35-year professional career was spent at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, PA, practicing as a clinical endocrinologist and clinical professor. Besides his clinical practice, a major mission in his life was diabetes education for both physicians and patients. He served on various committees at the local, state, and national level for the American Diabetes Association, as well a being a member of the Pennsylvania Diabetes Task Force. He had Type I diabetes himself and was months shy of receiving a 75-year medal from the Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston for living with Type I diabetes for 75 years. Dr. Grammes was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Spry. He enjoyed sailing, golf, and spending time with family. Dr. Grammes is survived by his son, Jeffery of Slidell, LA; a daughter, Christine Grammes Smith and husband, Peter, of Springfield, VA; four grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and brother Louis Grammes of Mechanicsburg, PA. He was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Grammes. Services are private at the convenience of the family. Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Rd., York is in charge of arrangements.
