Dorothy (Putnum) Herrington

TROY- Dorothy Herrington, of Troy, PA went to be with the Lord on September 21, 2007 at Troy Community Hospital. Dorothy Putnam Herrington was born August 15, 1911. The daughter of Azor and Gertrude Putnam, Dorothy grew up on the family farm on Orchard Hill road, just outside Troy. She graduated from Troy High School in 1928. An avid bowler in her youth, she was a member of the championship team sponsored by the Van Dyne Oil Company. In later years, she took up golf, playing until she was 90. She kept her mind sharp with daily cross-word puzzles and bi-weekly bridge games with friends well into her 90's. A talented dress-maker, she often created her own patterns for the fine materials her customers and friends brought to her to fashion into wool suits and silk dresses. Many past members of the Troy High School band and cheerleading squads probably wore uniforms altered by Dorothy. She also turned her craft skill to upholstering furniture and caning chairs. She volunteered for a number of years at the Bradford County Manor where she taught stick weaving. She was a devoted, lifelong member of the Troy Baptist Church. Over the years, she sang in the choir, taught Sunday school, organized the Worldwide Guild (a young women's church group), was president of the American Baptist Women's group and belonged to the Friendly Circle. She loved the fellowship of the Church. She also loved her family. She is predeceased by her husband, Howard, with whom she shared fifty four years of marriage. She is survived by her son, John of Troy; her daughter, Anne of Amherst, MA; and her granddaughters, Amelia and Amanda who reside in California. Family and friends are welcome to call from 11:00 AM-1:00 PM on Tuesday, September 25, 2007 at the 1st Baptist Church of Troy, 162 Canton Street, Troy, PA. The funeral service to honor Dorothy's life will be held after the viewing at 1:30 PM on Tuesday, September 25th at the church with her pastor, Rev. Garry Zuber officiating. Burial is private and at the convenience of the family. The Gerald W. Vickery, Jr. Funeral Home, Inc. 110 West Main Street, Troy, PA, has been entrusted with the arrangements.
