York - Dorothy Marie (Haker) Heiss, 85, died at 11:31 p.m. Tuesday, August 12, 2008 at ManorCare Health Services - South. Born December 18, 1922, she was the only child of the late Walter E. and Marie E. (Warren) Haker. Dorothy was an Honor Student in the Class of 19M41 at William Penn Senior High School and was a 1942 graduate of Thompson Business School where she was a member of the Alpha Sata Sorority. During World War II she was employed by the Philadelphia Ordinance District as a clerk-typist in their York office, 250 East Market Street. Dorothy was the first secretary of Trola Industries, retiring December 31, 1987 after more than 15 years of service. Since April 1988, for 11 years, she was employed by Community Progress Council as a part-time clerical assistant at various offices throughout York. For the next few years Dorothy was employed by York County in the Divorce Masters office, retiring August 30, 2002. She was a member of both the National and Local Chapter #24 of AARP where she was a member of the chorus. Dorothy was a former member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, York and St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church, West York, where she participated on both choirs. She is survived by two sons, Richard A. Heiss and wife, Luciele of Harrisburg, and Robert E. Heiss and companion, Donna Floyd of York; a daughter, Nancy E. Griffin and husband, Scott H., Sr. of Spring Grove; five grandchildren, Michael Heiss and wife Peggy of Harrisburg, Anthony Heiss and wife, Elvira of Greensboro, NC, Robert Heiss of York, and Lenee and Dawnelle Shaw of Whitehall, MD; six great grandchildren, Rebecca, Anthony, Kelly, Eric, Mark and James Heiss. A Celebration of Life Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, August 16th at Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, 1551 Kenneth Road, York with the Rev. Dr. Robert Stoudt, pastor of Penbrook United Church of Christ in Harrisburg, officiating. Viewing will be 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at the chapel. Burial will be in Greenmount Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the York County Community Foundation Dollars for Scholars for Wm. Penn Senior High School Choir, 14 West Market Street, York, PA 17401.
