WILKES-BARRE-Doris E. Smith, 87, of Washington Square Apartments, Wilkes-Barre, passed away Thursday, July 26, 2012 at River Street Manor, Wilkes-Barre. Born in Wilkes-Barre on November 14, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Fredrick C. and Barbara Elizabeth (Knoth) Hummel. She was a graduate of E.L. Meyers High School. Doris was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Wilkes-Barre, where she was active in various church activities. She was also a volunteer for Meals on Wheels. Prior to retiring in 1989, she was employed as the supervisor of the Accounts Payable Department at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital. She was preceded in death by her husband, George I. Smith, Sr., brothers William and Carl Hummel and half brothers Lou and Larry Hummel. Surviving are her sons, George I. Smith, Jr. of Mountain Top; Gary W. Smith and his wife, Donna, Mountain Top; 5 grandchildren, George, Dawn, Chad, Todd and Amy; 8 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be held Sunday at 4:00 p.m. from Kniffen O’Malley Funeral Home, Inc., 465 S. Main Street, Wilkes-Barre with services at 4:30 p.m. at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 190 S. Main Street, Wilkes-Barre. Pastor Peter Kuritz will officiate. Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family. Friends may call Saturday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and Sunday from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Kniffen O’Malley Funeral Home, Inc., 465 S. Main St. Wilkes-Barre. Memorial donations may be made to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 190 S. Main Street, Wilkes-Barre, PA 18702.
