Dorcas E. (Landis) Haverstick

Dorcas E. (Landis) Haverstick, 73 of York PA passed away January 17, 2017 quietly at home with family. Dorcas was a proud lifelong resident of York. She was the daughter of the late William and Etta (Garver) Landis. She graduated from William Penn Senior High School in 1961 and recently attended her 55th reunion. She was a long-time member of Bethany United Church of Christ and Faith United Church of Christ. Dorcas retired from the York City School District after 24 years, where she took great pride in her office work and in volunteering as an unofficial photographer and historian for the District. Early in her career she worked at Print-O-Stat, Harvey Printing and the Bon Ton printing department. Her greatest joy was amateur photography, compiling a photographic library of 266 photo albums, spanning from 1962 until the 2017 New Year’s events, all fully indexed. Throughout her life Dorcas had a strong desire to always help people and organizations in need, she did this through volunteer administrative work and sharing her time, hugs and love of photography. The postcards she would make with the photos she took warmed the hearts of many in the community and family when they needed a kind thought. Dorcas also enjoyed travelling; meeting her husband (a bus driver at the time) and some of her closest friends on bus trips around the country. She is survived by her loving husband James W Haverstick, daughters Holly Haverstick of Washington, D.C. and Becky Haverstick of Frederick, MD, and step-son Craig Haverstick of San Diego, CA. She is preceded in death by her daughter Heather Haverstick of York. Family and friends may extend their condolences and share Dorcas’s life of kindness and beauty on Saturday, January 21 from 9 to 10:30 a.m., at Heffner Funeral Chapel and Crematory Inc., 1551 Kenneth Rd., York. This will be a combined ceremony with her daughter Heather Haverstick, who passed on 14 January. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be offered in Dorcas’s memory to Hospice & Community Care online at https://www.hospiceconnect.org/give or via mail at 685 Good Drive, P.O. Box 4125, Lancaster, PA 17604-4125.
