Donna Jean Hollinger

York - Donna Jean Hollinger, 86, passed away Wednesday, August 1, 2018 at Pappus House. A Gathering of Friends will be held on Thursday, August 9th from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Heffner Funeral Chapel and Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Road, York. Born October 29, 1931 in York, she was the daughter of the late Lester N. and Henrietta (Jones) Hollinger. As a teenager, Donna was adopted by the late Dorothy I. Althoff. Donna and Dorothy fell in love with their very close friends’ children whom they called niece and nephew. Niece Cathy M. Dolinger and husband, Curt, grand-niece Jamie L. Slenker, and nephew Thomas B. Eyster and wife, Carolyn. Donna graduated from William Penn Senior High School in 1949. She was a member of the York High Weekly, the school newspaper, where she served as Feature Editor and Managing Editor. Upon graduating, she was offered a job at the Gazette and Daily printshop as a Secretary/Proofreader. Later she was transferred to the front office where she worked as a Clerk-typist and Switchboard Operator. In 1973, the Gazette and Daily was bought by the York Daily Record, where Donna continued to work in the front office until retiring in 2009 with 60 years of service. Donna loved to bowl through-out her life and did so until April of this year. She was a member of the York Athletic Club, participating in their water aerobics program, and also the Yorktowne Senior Center, playing bingo with her many friends. To all that shared lunches, bowling, theater, etc. with Donna, you meant so much to her. Her family cherishes their lifetime of memories with their beloved Aunt Donna.
