LOCK HAVEN, PA- Donald G. Avery, 92, formerly of Troy, PA, passed away on Friday, August 6, 2010 at the Susque-View Home in Lock Haven, PA. He was the loving husband of the late Ruth (Knowlton) Avery who passed away on February 23, 1999. The couple married on June 14, 1941 and had 57 happy years together. Family and friends are welcome to gather from 1:00-3:00 PM on Wednesday, August 11, 2010 at the Gerald W. Vickery, Jr. Funeral Home, Inc. 110 West Main St. Troy, PA. The funeral service to honor Don's life will be held at 3:00 PM on Wednesday, August 11th at the funeral home with family friend Rev. Andrew M. France, Jr., retired Episcopal Priest, officiating. Burial will follow the funeral service in Glenwood Cemetery. Don was born on June 3, 1918 in Sylvania, PA, son of the late Elmer E. and Crease (Hanna) Avery. He was a 1936 graduate of Troy High School and graduated from Mansfield State Teachers College with a Bachelors degree in Education. Don taught History and Math for many years at Troy High School until he retired. He was a member of Emanuel United Church of Christ in Sebring, FL, was an over 60 year member of the Trojan Lodge #306 of Free & Accepted Masons, the Valley of Williamsport Consistory, the Sylvania, PA and Sebring, FL Lion's Clubs, and Pine Lodge. Don was a charter and board member of the Wheel Inn, was a member of the Hamilton Club, was a "55 Alive" instructor, and served as a volunteer for Nu Hope in Sebring, FL. Don is survived by his children: Linda (Stephen) Prior of Linden, PA, John W. "Jack" (Bonnie) Avery of Troy, PA, and Gail (William) Hunter of Lock Haven, PA, 4 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, sisters-in-law Dorothy Stiles of Troy, PA, and Glenda Avery of Ephrata, PA, his niece Nancy Haven, his nephew Gary Avery, and his companion and dear friend Marie Scott. Don was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Ruth, his brother Dale Avery, and his nephews Greg and Garth Avery. Contributions may be made in Don's memory to the charity of one's own choosing.
