Dexter R. Kunkel

Philadelphia - Dexter Ray Kunkel, 57, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, October 22, 2023. He was the loving husband of Monique (Clark) Kunkel to whom he was married for 22 years.


Born July 19, 1966 in Austin, Texas, Dexter is a son of R. Lee and the late Rosalind (Horn) Kunkel. While in high school, Dex (Dexter) attended York VoTech. In 1984, he made the York County All Star Football Team. He was the only VoTech player to do so. He was a defensive end and tight end. Dex went on to play football at Shippensburg University.


Upon graduating high school, he attended Shippensburg University. Dex was an entrepreneur - he owned restaurants, and was an independent contractor driving tractor trailers. Dexter loved sports, and played football and basketball all through school. He was a dedicated Dallas Cowboys fan, and rarely missed a game. He was known for his cooking skills, especially behind a grill. Dex also had a passion for Southern cooking, which he complained he didn't get nearly enough in Pennsylvania! Dexter was a great father, and loved all his children, and grandchildren.


In addition to his wife and father, Dexter is survived by his four sons, Edward James Kunkel, Tyler Ray Kunkel, Dexter Ray Kunkel, Jr., and Lawrence Smith; four daughters, Rosalina Kunkel, Lakeasha Mendez, Breyonnia Kunkel, and Mariah Kunkel; seven grandchildren, Noah Cofre, Kayuri Garcia, Antionio Mendez, Janellie Kunkel, Sebastian Kunkel, Sage Kunkel, and Everly Kunkel; six siblings, Brad Lee Kunkel, Robin Lee Kunkel, David Lee Kunkel, Jenifer Lee Kunkel, Elizabeth Lee Holmes, and Kosal Svy; many nieces and nephews; and many of his biological family members still in Austin, Texas. In addition to his mother, Dexter is preceded in death by two brothers, Scott Lee Kunkel, and Anthony Lee Kunkel.
