Dena C. Markel

RED LION- Dena C. (Osburn) Markel, 91, of Windsor Township, passed away Friday, December 9, 2016 at Manor Care Health Services in Dallastown. She was the wife of the late Elmer W. “Bud” Markel. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, December 14, 2016 at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, 900 Pleasant Grove Rd. in Red Lion. Pastor Terry Robinson and The Reverend Joe Yorks will be officiating at the service. Viewings will be from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday at Life Tributes by Olewiler & Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 35 Gotham Place in Red Lion and 10 -11 a.m. at the church on Wednesday. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Mrs. Markel was born in Fayetteville, Arkansas on February 20, 1925, the daughter of Elijah T. and Genoa May (Tackett) Osburn, Sr. Dena and Bud were co-owners of Markel’s Place Country Store in the late 1940’s. Later she worked as a mother and homemaker until her children attended school. She then worked as a waitress at Warner’s Dairyland through four ownerships over a 30 year period. After retirement she had a small consignment shop at Markel’s Motors to keep herself busy. Mrs. Markel was a member of Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church in Red Lion. She loved spending time with her family and enjoyed many Sunday and holiday suppers with them. Mrs. Markel leaves a son, Butch Markel and his wife Ruth of Brogue; two daughters, Pat M. Thompson and her husband Bob of Dallastown, and Pamela K. Markel of Red Lion; five grandchildren, Lance Markel, Shelly Bunch, Samantha Markel, Mickey Smith and Jerry Smith; six great grandchildren, Ashli, Tori, Bridget, Dylan, Cole, and Madisynn; a sister, Clela Cole of Hamilton, IL; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother, Elijah Osburn, Jr.; and three sisters, Hassie Nichols, Vernie Atterberry, and Vivian Bryant.
