YORK Delphine (Gemmill) Howes, 85, died at 8:50 a.m. Friday, July 19, 2013 at Rest Haven Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, York. She was the wife, for 50 years, of the late R. Edward Howes, who died June 15, 2003. Services and burial will be private at the convenience of the family with her pastor, the Rev. Ron Oelrich, officiating. Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, 1551 Kenneth Rd., York is in charge of arrangements. Born February 2, 1928, in Red Lion, she was the daughter of the late Everett R. and Mabel (Frederick) Gemmill. Delphine was a registered nurse, who graduated from the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania Hospital School of Nursing in 1948, and earned a Baccalaureate Degree in Behavioral Science from York College in 1979. She was employed by the York Hospital for 26 years, where she held various nursing administrative positions, until her retirement in 1990. Delphine was an active member of the York County VNA Board of Directors for 20 years, participating in many Board committees. She was also a member of Faith United Church of Christ, York. She is survived by three sons, Bradley and his wife, Karen Howes of Trout Run, PA, David Howes of Felton, and Steven and his wife, Gina Howes of Heber, Utah; three granddaughters; two grandsons; a step grandson; a great grandson; and two great granddaughters. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to ForSight Vision York County Blind Center 1380 Spahn Avenue - York PA, 17403; Wellspan VNA Home Care, 540 South George Street, York, PA 1740; or to a favorite charity.
