POTTSVILLE - Dawn Smith, 78, a former resident of Pottsville, died Sunday at the Chemung County Nursing Facility, Elmira, NY. Born in Pottsville on September 15, 1932, she was a daughter of the late William and Alice HelmsHewes. On August 20, 1951 she married Robert L. Smith, who died March 4, 1990. She is a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Pottsville. In 2004 she moved to Elmira with her daughter. Married to a military man, she moved many times and lived many places including Munich, Germany and Ft. Knox, KY. She loved dancing, singing, bingo and making you laugh with all her jokes. Most of all, she loved her family. Surviving Dawn are: a son, Robert L. Smith, Jr. and his wife Debbie, Schuylkill Haven; a daughter, Debra L. and her husband Thomas Knoll, Elmira, NY; three grandchildren, Bryan Smith and his wife Christine, Bethlehem, PA, Tylor Knoll and his wife Kellie, Elmira, NY and Kylene A. Knoll and fianceeQuentin Kiah, Elmira Heights, NY; seven great grandchildren, Alexander, Nicholas, and Matthew Smith, Arianna, Ayden, Ashtyn, and Ayvre Knoll; a brother Jewels Jack Hewes, St. Clair; two sisters, Alice Carroll, Pottsville and Eleanor Moyer, Schuylkill Haven; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, Dawn was preceded in death by: sisters, Virginia Dreher and Sarah Lesher; and brothers, William, Samuel, Russell and Pierre Hewes. Funeral services will be held on Sunday afternoon at 6 PM from the Schlitzer Allen Pugh Funeral Home, Inc., 6th & W Market St., Pottsville, with the Reverend Darcy Reis officiating. Family and friends may call from the funeral home on Sunday from 4 until time of service. A procession will form Monday morning at 9 AM at the funeral home for burial at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, where she will be interred next to her husband.
