David R. Schad

YORK – David R. Schad, 82, passed away Saturday, January 26, 2013 at York Hospital. A celebration of life tribute service will be held Monday, February 4, 2013 at 2:00 PM at Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Road, York with full military rites provided by York County Veterans Honor Guard. Born August 12, 1930 in Larchmont, New York a son of the late Theodore “Ted” and Helen “JoJo” (Einstein) Schad, he was a graduate of Larchmont High School and earned his B.S. Degree at Wooster College in Ohio. Mr. Schad began his career working for C.P. Converters and then moved to Sun Oil Co. who brought him to York in 1968 as District Manager. In 1970, he began working for Bennett Williams Realty and in 1981 purchased the business. David has continued to operate and serve as Chairman of the Board of Bennett Williams Realty, Inc. until his death. Mr. Schad was an active member and had served two terms as President of The Outdoor Country Club. He was proud to have served as an ODCC Board Member for 23 years. Dave enjoyed many hours on the club golf course and generously donated funds for the construction of a walking bridge which has been named “Foot Wedge Bridge” due to Dave’s golfing tendencies. He was also a member of Regents Glen Country Club, Hawks Club, York Lodge F&AM 266, Scottish Rite, and York Forest 30. Mr. Schad was a member of the Realtor’s Assoc. of York and Adams Co. where he achieved the million dollar club award for at least 15 years. Dave was also actively involved with Crispus Attucks, Inc. and served on the boards for Better York, Inc., Strand Capitol Performing Arts Center, York County Boy Scouts of America; and was a former board member of Junior Achievement. He had been involved with York County Special Olympics for over 20 years. He was proud to have served in the US Army in the Korean War where he attained the rank of Corporal. Mr. Schad is survived by five nieces, Sarah “Sally” Griffin of Beaverton, OR, Sabra Hellmer of Sherwood, OR, Katherine Schad of NY, NY, Anne Verrill of Yarmouth, ME, and Olive Schad of Dallas, TX; two nephews, Theodore G. Schad of Deming, WA and Peter Schad of Appaloosa, LA; plus a multitude of good friends too numerous to mention. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Theodore “Pete” Schad and David’s twin brother, Tennyson “Tenny” Schad. He was also preceded in death by his long time good companion, Nancy Woodward. David was a kind, loving, loyal, generous person who loved life and lived it to the fullest. He will be sorely missed by family, friends, and the whole York community of which he was proud to be part of. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are encouraged to be made to Crispus Attucks Assoc., 605 S. Duke Street, York, PA 17401.
