BROGUE – Darlene D. (Dettinger) Strayer, 70, passed away Thursday, January 26, 2017 at Dallastown Nursing Center. She was the wife of Larry G. Strayer to whom she was married for 36 years. A celebration of life tribute service will be held at 11:00 AM Wednesday, February 1, 2017 at New Harmony Presbyterian Church, 2295 Delta Road, Brogue with her former pastor, The Rev. John R. Maisch officiating. Visitations will be held from 6-8:00 PM Tuesday at Life Tributes by Olewiler & Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 35 Gotham Place, Red Lion and from 10-11:00 AM Wednesday at the Church. Burial will be in New Harmony Presbyterian Cemetery. Born July 1, 1946 in York, a daughter of the late Charles W. and Thelma A. (Smith) Dettinger, she was a 1964 graduate of Red Lion Area High School. Darlene had worked for a few Churches in York and then retired from the Windsor Township Office after more than 20 years of service. She was a longtime member at New Harmony Presbyterian Church and enjoyed following NASCAR racing. Darlene took pride in growing and tending to her rose garden and cherished spending time with her family. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Strayer is survived by three sons, William F. Shermeyer and his fiancée, Beth Shoff of Red Lion, Craig A. and wife Emily Shermeyer of Brogue and Lewis E. Strayer of Dallastown; a daughter, Leola Lee and husband William March of Brogue; five grandchildren, Leah, Josh and Jack Shermeyer, Nicole and husband Albert Dickson, and Nicholas Shermeyer; two great grandsons, Mason and Leo Dickson; and a sister, Pauline and husband Dale Tyson of Red Lion. She was preceded in death by a brother, Larry Dettinger. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to National Parkinson Foundation, 200 SE 1st Street, Suite 800, Miami, FL 33131. The Strayer family extends a special thank you to the nurses and staff at Dallastown Nursing Center and Grane Hospice for their extraordinary care and compassion during Darlene's illness.
