Dan Mcguire Bowers

RED LION – Dan McGuire Bowers, 92, died at home on Wednesday, April 19, 2023. He was the husband of Shirley M. (Fleischman) Bowers to whom he was married for 67 years.

Born November 21, 1930 in Echo, Cambria County, a son of the late Floyd Daniel and Mary Margaret (McGuire) Bowers, he graduated from Southmont High School in Johnstown and then attended the University of Pittsburgh. In 1951 he enlisted in the United States Navy where he was proud to serve four years at sea in the destroyer USS Wren DD568, which included a tour in the Korean war zone, transit of the equator, and a circumnavigation of the earth.

Dan earned a B.S. in Physics with honors from Pennsylvania State University in 1956 and a M.E.E. from The Catholic University of America in 1960. He worked much of his life as a Consulting Engineer on projects across the country and around the world, including pioneer projects in computer sciences. Mr. Bowers retired in 1980 and did volunteer work for WITF television, the American Red Cross, and also founded Operation Paperback to supply the troops with books while deployed.

In addition to his beloved wife, Dan leaves behind his treasured children, Christina Anne Lotito and husband Dean of Dunstable, MA, Kathleen Margaret Bowers of Middletown, and Daniel Matthew Bowers and wife Kathy of Glen Rock; two grandchildren, Daniel and Megan Honeywell of Dunstable, MA; two brothers, Philip and Bill Bowers; and a sister, Judy Atwell.

Tribute services and burial will be private in Mt. Rose Cemetery with full military honors provided by York County Veterans Honor Guard. Olewiler & Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 35 Gotham Place, Red Lion is in charge of arrangements.
