Craig A. Newton

YORK - Craig A. Newton Sr., 89, went to be with the Lord on January 10, 2021 at SpiriTrust Lutheran Home. Craig was the husband of Linda F. Newton. The couple had been married for 41 years. Services are private at the convenience of the family. Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory Inc. 1551 Kenneth Road is in charge of arrangements. Born in Burlington, Vermont on September 19, 1931, Craig was the son of the late Harold D. and Jennie (Craigue) Newton. After serving our country in the United States Army, Craig taught history for 33 years as a professor at Bloomsburg University. While at Bloomsburg Craig wrote a local history book with his colleague James R. Sperry, “A Quiet Boomtown: Jamison City, Pa. 1889-1912” (Columbia County Historical Society, 1972). After retiring from Bloomsburg, Craig started a second career as a local pastor with the United Methodist Church. Craig and Linda currently attended services at Emmanuel United Methodist Church in Windsor, the church he served as pastor from 1992 – 2000. After retiring from Emmanuel Church, he served as a visitation pastor at Otterbein United Methodist Church in York for 11 years. He also volunteered as a chaplain with York Hospital, VNA Hospice and Dallastown Nursing Center. The family enjoyed taking vacations to Vermont and Cape May and spending time with family and friends. After he finally retired for good at age 80 he loved watching M*A*S*H* and Philadelphia sports teams on TV, eating out at his favorite restaurants, and enjoying reading—history books of course. Left to cherish his memory is his wife; his son, Craig Newton Jr and his wife Teresa; daughters, Genie Tyburski, and Renee Newton; grandchildren, Alex Tyburski, Loren Tyburski, Theresa Ceridwen, Danielle Whitmer, Cameron Newton, Jennifer Newton, Justin Newton, Logan Jenkins, and Megan Jenkins; great-grandchildren, Jackson Smart, Theron Smart, Millie Whitmer, Dean Whitmer, and Ethan Johnson; brother Denny Ryder and his wife Judy; brother-in-law Donald Mensch; sister-in-law Debra Hake; niece, Sarah Kostenbauder; and nephew Philip Hake and several other nieces and nephews. Craig was preceded in death by his parents, his step-mother Catharine Newton, his son Harold Newton, and his sister Miriam Childs.
