WAVERLY, NY-Claude E. Chapman, Jr., 80, of Waverly, NY, passed away on Friday, March 14, 2008 at the Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, PA. He is the loving husband of Elizabeth "Betty" (Sayman) Chapman. The couple married on June 12, 1948. Claude was born on October 21, 1927 in Springfield, Bradford County, PA. He was the son of the late Claude E. and Hazel P. (Chilson) Chapman, Sr. Claude was a US Army Veteran; he served 2 tours in Europe after World War II. Claude was owner and operator of the Wellsburg Gulf Station in Wellsburg, NY, and later owned and operated Jr.'s Place in Athens, PA. He was a member and past commander of the VFW Post #384 in New Albany, PA, was a member of the American Legion Post #246 in Athens, PA, was a member of the New Albany Volunteer Fire Department, and was an associate member of the Wellsburg Volunteer Fire Department. Claude attended Sayre Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). He was an avid fisherman, hunter, loved stock car racing and NASCAR, traveled throughout the country and Canada in a motor home with his family, and in his younger days used to box in golden glove tournaments. To Claude family was most important. His family includes his wife Betty of Waverly, his son Dennis (Cheryl) Chapman of Erin, NY, his daughter Wendy (Sam) Keely of Waverly, NY, his grandchildren: Jerime Chapman, Shannon Chapman, Joshua Chapman, Adam Keely, Douglas Jones, and Alexander Huff, his brother Frank (Hattie) Chapman of Elmira, NY, his sister Lola Jean Chapman Bouse of Sayre, PA, and seven nieces and nephews. Claude was preceded in death by his parents, his grandson Matthew Keely, his brother Albert Chapman, and his two brothers-in-law: George Bouse and Charles Chapman. Family and friends are welcome to call from 2:00-5:00 PM and again from 7:00-9:00 PM on Sunday, March 16, 2008 at the Roberts Funeral Home, Inc. 279 Main Street, Wellsburg, NY. The funeral service to honor Claude's life will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, March 17th at the funeral home with Rev. James Donahoo officiating. Burial will follow the service in Bradford County Memorial Park with Military rites given by the Valley Color Guard. In leau of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Guthrie Hospice, RR 1 Box 154 Towanda, PA 18848
