Clarence "John" Dettinger, Jr.

YORK- Clarence W. “John” Dettinger, Jr., 95, passed away Thursday, January 25, 2024 at Gardens at Gettysburg. He was the husband of Pauline Lorraine (Mundis) Dettinger. The couple celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary on February 26, 2023.


A celebration of life memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, January 31, 2024 at Springvale Church, 265 Circle Dr., in Red Lion, with a visitation from 10-11 a.m. Burial will be in Bethlehem Stonepile Cemetery in Red Lion with full military honors by York County Veterans Honor Guard. A reception will be held in the church social hall following the graveside service. Olewiler & Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory in Red Lion is assisting the family with the arrangements.


Mr. Dettinger was born in Red Lion on December 31, 1928, the son of the late Clarence W. Dettinger, Sr. and Elsie M. (Schmuck) Dettinger. He retired from Gohn Brothers in Red Lion; prior to that he had worked as a mason.


Mr. Dettinger was a member of Springvale Church in Red Lion. He was a member of Red Lion American Legion and AARP. He enjoyed traveling to his camp in Potter County and spending time there with family and friends where he enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was an avid bowler and a member of leagues at Red Lion Bowling center and then Suburban Bowl-a-Rama. He enjoyed traveling to Alaska and Hawaii as well as a seven-week tour to many sites in the western United States. He served in the US Marines during the Korean War.


Along with his wife Pauline, Mr. Dettinger leaves a son, Steven W. Dettinger and his wife Kim of York; two grandchildren, Derric Dettinger and his wife Jennifer and Jonathan Dettinger and his wife Teresa; and five great grandchildren, Anna, Nora, Walker, Colette, and Asher Dettinger. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Tammy A. Tenney; a grandson, Bryce William Tenney; two brothers, Dale and Kenneth Dettinger; and three sisters, Minnie Grove, Betty Arnold, and Shirley Mundis.


In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Springvale Church, 265 Circle Drive, Red Lion, PA 17356.
