Charles W. Nace

York—Charles W. Nace, 89, died Tuesday, April 1, 2014 at Normandie Ridge Nursing Home. He was the husband of Louise M. (Kessler) Nace to whom he was married for 53 years. Born February 4, 1925 in Bair Station, he was a son of the late Charles H. and Goldie M. (Andrews) Nace. He was a graduate of West York High School and a United States Army Air Corps Veteran of World War II, Tech Sgt. Nace served as a radio operator/ gunner on a B-24 Heavy Bomber with the 376th Bomb Group /513th Squadron, flying 35 bombing missions over Europe from his base in Italy. He was employed by Excello Distribution Company as a warehouse and shipping manager for 42 years until his retirement in 1983. He was also a life member of St. Paul’s (Wolf’s) Evangelical Covenant Church and a member of the Shiloh American Legion Post 791. An avid outdoorsman, he loved hunting and fishing, a passion he proudly passed on to his grandsons. Mr. Nace is survived by two children, Linda L. Gilkey and her husband, Bob of York and Charles D. Nace and his wife, Ann of Schnecksville; four grandsons, Brett Pottorff and wife, Robyn, Ben Gilkey, Charles Jesse Nace and Eric Nace, great-grandson Wyatt Pottorff and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Jacob “Pickle” Nace and Linden “Jim” Nace; two sisters, Dorothy “Dot” Pentz and Odessa “Dess” Flickinger/Coulson and two nephews, Robert and Donald Nace. A Celebration of Life Service will be private at the convenience of the family. Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Rd, York is in charge of arrangements. The family would like to thank York Hospital staff for the care our father received during his numerous hospital stays. Secondly, we want to thank Providence Place for giving Dad a home environment when he most needed one. Finally we would like to thank Normandie Ridge for their compassion in helping Dad on his long journey home.
