TROY- Charles Frederick DeWalt, 86, of Columbia Cross Roads, PA, passed away on Sunday, April 10, 2011 at the Troy Community Hospital in Troy, PA. He was the loving husband of Melvia Martha (McKerrow) DeWalt. The couple married October 20, 1924 and had 62 happy years together. Family and friends are welcome to gather from 12:00-1:00 PM on Wednesday, April 13, 2011 at the Gerald W. Vickery, Jr. Funeral Home, Inc. 110 West Main Street Troy, PA. The funeral service to honor Charlies life will be held at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, April 13th, at the funeral home with his pastor, Rev. Chris Nauta, officiating. Burial will follow in Glenwood Cemetery with military honors given by the Troy Veterans Honor Guard. Charlie was born on September 20, 1924 in Forks Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania, son of the late Robert and Anna (Kale) DeWalt. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in the Philippines during World War II, and was awarded the Purple Heart Medal for being wounded in combat. After the war he returned home and married Melvia and started a family. He retired from Triaires Products in the late 1970s, was a member of the Columbia Cross Roads United Methodist Church, and the Disabled American Veterans. Charlie is survived by his wife Melvia, his children Lillie Anna Thomas of Canton, PA, and Wallace Mark DeWalt of Charlotte, TN, his grandchildren; Timothy (Amy) Thomas, Jeffrey (Courtney) Thomas, and Martha (Joshua) Watkins, his great grandchildren; Avery Watkins, Isais Watkins, Katelynn Thomas, Mathew Thomas, Elijah Thomas, and Marian Watkins, his brothers Therman DeWalt of Slatington, PA, Aaron (Dorothy) DeWalt of Troy, PA, Harold (Maraleen) DeWalt of Mansfield, PA, his sisters; Sara (Gene) Ridd of Brockport, NY, Orpha Jane Sellhorse of Elmira, NY, Anna (Harry) Bond, Jr. of Churchville, NY, and Ella Taylor of Macungie, PA, along with several nieces and nephews. Charlie was preceded in death by his parents, his son-in-law Lester Thomas, brother-in-law Donald Taylor, and sister-in-law Katherine DeWalt. Memorial contributions may be made in Charlies memory to the Columbia Cross Roads United Methodist Church, Columbia Cross Roads, PA 16914.
