TROY - Charles (Chuck) May, Jr., 89, well known businessman of Troy, PA passed away on June 30, 2013 at the Troy Hospital. Charles was born in Troy on September 12, 1923 the son of Charles and Thressa (Reidy) May. He graduated from Troy High School in 1941 and after returning from military service, he attended Cornell University. He entered the military in June 1942 and graduated as a fighter pilot in June, 1943. He was immediately sent overseas as a co-pilot on a B-17 bomber crew with the Martin Provisional Group, a group of 32 bomber crews who served as replacement crews. Chuck’s crew flew the “Winnie C” bomber and was the only crew of the 32 crews to complete 25 missions and have all 10 men alive. Chuck returned to “The States” and became a First Pilot, flying out of Florida for 2 years training Radar crews. Chuck married Phyllis Tuttle on April 21, 1944. In 1952 they built their dream home on Prospect St where Chuck resided until December 2010 when Sherwood’s Personal Care Home lovingly took over his care. Chuck and Phyl raised three children; Sheila Angove, Jerry (Susan) May and Candace May. He is also survived by grandchildren John (Sherri) Angove, Cara May, Rob (Jody) Spencer, and Rayna (Brock) Kitchen and great grandchildren Cali Angove, Isaiah May, Cooper Kitchen, Kendall Kitchen, Cole Spencer and Mackenzie Spencer. Chuck is also survived by his sister June Mitchell and many nieces and nephews. Chuck entered the insurance business in 1946 with his father and built a very successful insurance agency. He worked there until it was purchased by his son and he retired in 1987. Chuck was a 60 year member of the Troy Lion’s Club having served in all the offices in the local club. He also received the Melvin Jones Award, the highest honor in Lionism and was District Governor in 1966-67. He was a member of the Troy American Legion, Troy VFW, Armenia Mountain Debating Society and the Cross Roads Hunting Camp. Chuck’s wife of 59 years, Phyl, passed in 2003 and his granddaughter Wendi Jo Angove in 1977. Family and friends are invited to call from 9-11 AM on Friday, July 5, 2013 at the First Baptist Church of Troy. A funeral service directed by Rev Garry Zuber will follow at 11AM. Military honors will follow at the graveside in Glenwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be directed to the Troy Lion’s Club Christmas Basket fund to provide Christmas food and gifts to deserving families.
