York—Chalmers W. “Dutch” Bahn, 89, died Monday, April 14, 2014 at his residence in York Township surrounded by his loving family and good friend. He was the husband of Emma A. (Dennis) Bahn to whom he was married for 63 years. A Celebration of Life Service will be 2 PM, Friday, April 18, 2014 at Life Tributes by Olewiler & Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 35 Gotham Place, Red Lion with his pastor, the Rev. Joel N. Coleman officiating. A viewing will be held from 1-2 PM, Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be held in Windsor Cemetery with full military honors provided by the York County Veterans Honor Guard. Born March 16, 1925 in Windsor, he was a son of the late Emanuel and Jessie (Gabriel) Bahn. He was employed for 38 years as a truck mechanic for Miller Motor Freight of York and AAA Trucking Co of Lancaster where he retired from in 1987. Following his retirement he worked with White Jewelers in York. A United States Navy Veteran of World War II, he survived the sinking of the USS Beatty DD640 in the Mediterranean Sea and was present at the surrender of the Japanese on Pagan Island. He was a member of the Tin Can Sailors and Des Ron Destroyer Squadron, serving in the European and Pacific Campaigns and was awarded the Navy Occupation Service Medal and Victory Medal. He was a member of the Pine Grove United Methodist Church, was on the Board of Management at Bethlehem Farm, Teamsters Local 771 of Lancaster, Viking Athletic Assoc., and a life member of the V.F.W Post 8951. He collected early American clocks for 25 years and was a member of the National Association of Clock Collectors. In addition to his wife, Mr. Bahn is also survived by one daughter, Norma J. Brown and her husband, Carl Jr., of York; two grandchildren, Rhonda J. Deppen and her husband, Tim of York and Troy L. Rupert and his wife, Steph of Bohannon, VA; one great granddaughter, Larissa A. Deppen of York and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one brother and one sister. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Pine Grove United Methodist Church, 2523 Pine Grove Rd, York, PA 17403.
