YORK - Henry L. "Butch" Kern, 70, passed away Sunday, November 29, 2009 at York Hospital. He was the husband of Sandra Ann (Linebaugh) Kern to whom he was married for 53 years. Funeral service and burial will be private. Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Road, York is in charge of arrangements. Born September 13, 1939 in Thomasville a son of the late Henry S. and Alta S. (Emily) Kern, he owned and operated Butch's Garage in North York for more than 15 years. Following his retirement, Butch worked part-time at AutoZone and CARQUEST. He was a member of York County Garageman's Assoc., and a former member of Teamsters Union and York County Racing Club. Butch was a stock car racer in the 1950's at Lincoln and Susquehanna Speedway. He enjoyed NASCAR and all sports, loved hunting and fishing, and was a handyman who could fix anything. In addition to his wife, Mr. Kern is survived by two daughters, Shelby L. Phillips of York and Annette S. and husband Darwin R. Fletcher of White Marsh, MD; three sons, Stephen H. and wife Sandra M. Kern of Dallastown, Lonn L. and wife Connie M. Kern of York, and Charles W. Kern of York; three granddaughters, Danielle M. Kern, Samantha L. Phillips, and Gracelyn A. Fletcher; two great grandchildren, Treyton M. Smith and Faith M. Groff; aunts; uncles; cousins; and a close family friend, Roger Miller of York. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to York Health Foundation, 912 S. George St., York, PA 17403.
