Burton Robert Shellhammer

YORK - Burton R. Shellhammer, 95, passed away on Wednesday, November 1, 2023 at SpiriTrust Lutheran after a short battle with old age. He was the loving husband of the late Lois A. (Gerbrick) Shellhammer, to whom he was married for 66 years.


A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date, at the convenience of the family. Heffner Funeral Chapel and Crematory, Inc. is in charge of arrangements.


Born April 7, 1928 in Steelton, Mr. Shellhammer was a son of the late Harry and Ruth (McCauley) Shellhammer. Upon his graduation from high school, Mr. Shellhammer enlisted in the Marine Corps, and proudly served our country during WWII. Mr. Shellhammer spent the majority of is working life with the Central York School District starting out as a high school history teacher, while completing his master’s degree in education at Western Maryland College in the evenings. He then worked as a guidance counsellor and finally as district’s pupil personnel administrator for the las 20 years for his career until his retirement in 1991.


Mr. Shellhammer was very active at his church, St. Marks Lutheran Church, and served many years as an Elder and member of church council. He was also a part of the American Legion, and the Marine Corps League, along with numerous other organizations. In his free time, Mr. Shellhammer could be found playing bridge or poker, going to his grandchildren’s sports games or traveling to Europe and around the US and Canada.


Mr. Shellhammer is survived by his two sons, Todd G. Shellhammer and wife, Patricia of Harrisburg, and Brett A. Shellhammer and wife, Charlotte of Ontario, Canada; six grandchildren, Baxter, Alex, Lucy, Anna, Raymond, and Harry; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Shellhammer was preceded in death by his sisters, Lydia M. Powers, E. Ann Meyer, and Judith M. Schwalm.


In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to St. Jude Chidren’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105
