DOVER- Bruce E. Shaffer, Jr., 56, of Dover Township, passed away peacefully at home after a brief illness with his family by his side. He was the husband of Kathy D. (Anderson) Shaffer. The couple celebrated their 23rd wedding anniversary on October 27, 2007. A combined Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday September 13, 2008 for Bruce and his mother, Betty J. (Knighton) Shaffer, who passed away July 31, 2008, at Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Rd. in York, with a visitation from 1-2 p.m. Full military honors will be rendered by York County Veteran's Honor Guard at the start of the service. Bruce was born in York on July 11, 1952, a son of the late Bruce E. and Betty J. (Knighton) Shaffer, Sr. He worked as a welder for 34 years for Voith Siemens Hydro Power Generation in York and enjoyed many trips out of the country with his work. Bruce was a Certified SCUBA diver; a member of: May Hollow Recreation Hunting Club, York Rifle Range Association, Sterling Run Sportsman, Inc., IAM Local 1400, and Shiloh American Legion Post 791. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved the ocean and his three cats. He was a US Army veteran who served in the 54th Engineer Battalion, 130th Engineer Brigade, stationed in Wildflecken, Germany, where he was promoted to Spec 4, during the Vietnam Conflict. Along with his wife, Bruce leaves a daughter, Samantha D. Shaffer, at home, a sister, Teresa A. Filson and her companion, Mike Duncan of York, sister-in-law, Donna E. Holland and her husband Paul; and nieces and nephews: Ed Holland, Steven Hill, April Smith, and Kyle and Erin Filson. A sister, Linda A. Witmer preceded him in death. Memorial contributions may be made to VNA/Hospice, United Cerebral Palsy Association, or American Cancer Society.
