Betty L. (Sowers) Rice

YORK – Betty L. (Sowers) Rice, 84, passed away Wednesday, April 5, 2017 at York Hospital. She was the wife of the late Robert U. Rice, Jr. A celebration of life tribute service will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday, April 11, 2017 at Yorkshire United Methodist Church, 125 Edgewood Road, York with her Pastor, The Rev. Dennis A. Hummel and her son, The Rev. Brian K. Rice officiating. A visitation will be held from 10-11:00 AM Tuesday at the Church. Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Road, York is in charge of arrangements. Born September 26, 1932 in Dallastown, a daughter of the late David C. and Kathryn L. (Kornbau) Sowers, she earned her Registered Nurse degree from Lancaster General Hospital. Mrs. Rice was retired from the VNA of York. She was a member of the Red Hat Society; Lancaster General Hospital Nurses Alumni Assoc.; the president of the Widow's Support Group, the president of the 55+ group, a regular volunteer and organizer for various church ministries, and she enjoyed her work with missions activities as well. Mrs. Rice is survived by two sons, Rev. Brian K. and wife Rebecca K.H. Rice of Mt. Wolf and Robert A. Rice of Lititz; a grandson, Matthew R. Rice; and a wide group of close friends. She was preceded in death by a brother, David C. Sowers, Jr. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Yorkshire U.M., 125 Edgewood Rd., York, PA 17402 to benefit the Sanctuary renovation.
