RED LION – Betty J. Smeltzer, 77, passed away Thursday, April 3, 2014 at Rest Haven – York. A graveside tribute service will be held at 10:00 AM Monday, April 7, 2014 at Susquehanna Memorial Gardens with her pastor, The Rev. David Tietje officiating. Friends and family will meet at the cemetery entrance at 9:45 AM Monday. Life Tributes by Olewiler & Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 35 Gotham Place, Red Lion is in charge of arrangements. Born November 15, 1936 in York a daughter of the late William G. and Velma O. (Snell) Smeltzer, she was a graduate of Red Lion High School and York Junior College. Ms. Smeltzer retired from York College of Pennsylvania after 30 years of service. She collected Yorkie dog items, was an avid reader, and enjoyed going to the beach and being in the sun. Betty was a member of St. John’s United Church of Christ. Ms. Smeltzer is survived by a son, Chris D. and wife Connie Utz of Red Lion; a daughter, Stacy M. and husband Keith Burke of Red Lion; four grandchildren, Rebecca and husband Kevin Gibney, Brandon and wife Nicole Burke, Sara Utz, and Nicole and husband Tim Kohler; a step granddaughter, Tara Baker; five great grandchildren, Sadie, Ella, Brayden, Rhett, and Nylee; and her former husband, David G. Utz. Memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer’s Assoc., 3544 N. Progress Ave., Suite 205, Harrisburg, PA 17110 or to St. John’s UCC, 161 N. Main St., Red Lion, PA 17356. Betty was a loving mother and grandmother. She always put her family first. Family was the most important thing in her life. She was a great friend to many and a dedicated employee wherever she worked. She will be missed greatly by all who loved her.
