YORK- Bette Arlene (Myers) Gemmill, 95, passed on Monday, January 21, 2019, at York Hospital from complications resulting from a fall. Born October 16, 1923 in York, PA, she was the daughter of the late Harvey C. and Carrie E. (Senft) Myers. Bette started her family very young and worked various jobs including secretary, teaching secretarial skills, and personnel. After her children were grown, Bette graduated from The Johns Hopkins University School of Business Management and Teaching. She then took a Human Resources position with the U.S. Postal Service where she worked until retiring in 1997. In her younger days, Bette enjoyed roller-skating, bowling and dancing. She traveled throughout the US; cruised the Caribbean, Mediterranean and Alaskan waters; and vacationed in Europe and Israel. After retiring, Bette enjoyed her weekly card club gatherings, regular aquatic therapy sessions, and weekly visits to the beauty salon. Bette successfully invested in real estate and throughout her retirement, managed her own stock portfolio. Bette was always an animal lover and leaves behind two pet cats. Bette is survived by her son, Larry Gemmill of York, PA. Bette’s daughter, Penny Lou Shenberger passed in 2004 and blessed her with three grandchildren, Cherry Sweitzer, Mark Shenberger and Matthew Shenberger; three great grandchildren, Michaela Sweitzer, Eric Shenberger and Adam Shenberger; three great-great-grandchildren, Aislynn Sweitzer, Roczen Sweitzer and Juliana Shenberger; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was the oldest of five children and was preceded in death by four siblings, Harvey A. Myers, Marion E. Naill, Ethel J. Myers and Marlin Myers. Services are private at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Leschey’s Cemetery in North Codorus Twp. Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Rd., York is in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to HVI Gift Fund in memory of Bette Gemmill made payable to Johns Hopkins Medicine and mailed to: Johns Hopkins Heart and Vascular Institute Development Office, 600 N. Wolfe Street, Blalock 536; Baltimore MD 21287.
