Bernice S. (Smith) Hawkes

WILLIAMSPORT - Bernice S. (Smith) Hawkes, 81, died on Saturday, November 24, 2007 at Sycamore Manor. She was the loving wife for over 55 years to the late William H. Hawkes, Jr., who had died on March 20, 2005. Bernice was born on April 8, 1926 in Philadelphia and was a daughter of the late Edward and Ida (Pinkerton) Smith. She was a graduate of Dobbins High School in Philadelphia. She was a member of the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Abington. Bernice was active in the church groups and the church choir. She was also active with the Cub and Boy Scout Organizations and enjoyed square dancing. Bernice is survived by two sons; William H. Hawkes, III of Williamsport and Charles D. Hawkes of Etters, one daughter; Nancy J. Sterner of Reading, four grandchildren, two great grandsons, three brothers; Edward Smith of New Jersey, Richard Smith of Bedminster, PA and William Smith of Ocean City, New Jersey, and one sister; Ethel Driscoll of Willow Grove, PA. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one daughter; Karen D. Hawkes, two brothers; Robert and Charles Smith and one sister; Ida Batelle. Services will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are being handled by the Allen & Redmond Funeral Home, 331 Elmira St., Williamsport.
