Barry Lee Barley, age 83, transitioned into life eternal on Sunday, June 16, 2024 after a courageous battle with cancer and multiple health issues. The family rejoices that he is now in the presence of his Savior and is reunited with his family and friends that had gone on before him. Born July 30, 1940, in Dallastown, PA, he was the son of the late Paul and Ethel (Saylor) Barley. Barry is survived by his childhood friend and loving wife of 61years, Patricia (Henry). As a devoted father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Barry is survived by his daughters, Debra (Gregory) Loop and Donna (Kyle) Carwile; his four granddaughters Rebekah (Thomas) O’Brien, Jamie (Joshua) Pope, Brianne (Jeremy) Torres and Megan Carwile; and his five great-granddaughters Brianna Pope, Angela, Kathrin, Clare, and Isabelle O’Brien and a great-grandson Grayson Pope. He leaves a younger brother Terry (Faye) Barley, and brothers-in-law (wives), nieces and nephews.
Barry graduated from William Penn Senior High School and served in the United States Air Force from 1958 – 1962. He began his career as a machine operator at American Chain and Cable Co (1962-1968). He found his passion for work at Caterpillar, where he started as a laborer. He took advantage of learning opportunities offered to him and progressed through Caterpillar’s training programs. As a supervisor in the Caterpillar’s Engineering Department, Barry retired from CAT after 34 years as manager of the Plating and Heat Treat Department. Because of his leadership and knowledge of the heat-treating process, Barry was credited for developing several Caterpillar patents. When Caterpillar relocated the York’s heat-treating department to Mississippi, Barry was responsible for starting up and running the company’s plating and heat-treating department at the new location.
Barry lived in Hellam, PA for 55 years. He served on the Borough Council for several years. He enjoyed spending time with family, camping, boating, and gardening. He took great pride in growing some of the largest tomatoes in the local area.
Barry spent his life serving the Lord as an elder at Emmanuel Baptist Church. Even on his death bed, Barry’s message and heart's desire was for all to know that Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Barry awaits the heavenly arrival of his family and friends. He invites those who do not have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ to open their hearts to Him. For as John 3:36 says, "He that believeth on the Son has everlasting life."
A viewing will be held on Saturday, June 22, 2024, at Olewiler and Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 35 Gotham Place, Red Lion from 9-10:00 AM. The funeral service, officiated by Pastor Glenn Hilt, will follow the viewing at 10:00 AM. Interment will occur at Susquehanna Memorial Gardens with full military honors presented by York County Veterans Honor Guard.
In lieu of flowers, the grandchildren would like you to please consider a donation to your local SPCA or animal shelter. Barry enjoyed the family dogs and even up to the end, they brought him joy and renewed energy.
