Barry E. Bailey

YORK Barry E. Bailey, 78 passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 3, 2021 at home with his wife Nancy A. (Swartz) Bailey by his side. The couple celebrated their 49th wedding anniversary on March 4, 2021. A celebration of life service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, November 9, 2021 at Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Rd. in York, with a viewing from 12:30-1:30 p.m. The Reverend Brian A. McClinton will be officiating at the service. Burial will be in Mount Rose Cemetery, with full military honors provided by York County Veterans Honor Guard. Barry grew up as the only child of Austin C. and Helen Romaine (Wintermyer) Bailey on the Bull Road. He attended Central York High School. He proudly served his country in the US Army and was honorably discharged. Barry’s dad taught him to drive truck when he was sixteen years old. His first job was with Jimmy Wilson, Jr. Moving and Storage. He was there for a couple of years; he wasn’t cut out for moving furniture. He next drove for Kenneth E. Allison Trucking in Hungerford/Shrewsbury. He was there for five years when he found the truck driving job of his dreams. This was for Campbell Chain later becoming Cooper Tools, where he remained until they no longer maintained their own fleet of trucks so he retired after 28 years of service. He still had ten years to work until full retirement, so he found another job he loved with Specialty Carriers in Middletown. In his 45 years on the road, he never had an accident. He traveled from Toronto, Canada to Key West, FL and from Martha’s Vineyard to the west coast. He met hundreds of people and made many friends. After retiring he enjoyed working around his home and hanging out with his buddies in the evenings at Maple Doughnut Shop East. He liked watching his favorite teams, LA Dodgers, Green Bay Packers, NASCAR and going to see sprint cars at the local tracks. Once he drove a NASCAR stock car around the track at Pocono Raceway for three laps and reached 200mph. He was a member of the Hawk’s Gunning Club. He always looked forward to his annual trip to Myrle Beach with Nancy, which they took for 30 years. Barry’s heart and soul went out to his step son, Chris who is mentally challenged. He taught Chris how to drive a lawn tractor and took him for rides in his road truck. They spent hours together in the garage; they were buddies, Barry was Chris’s dad. Barry was a stranger to no one, always there with a shoulder for those he loved. He loved a great meal, good laughter and an interesting conversation. He leaves two stepsons, Christopher LaMotte and Troy Silar, both of York; two step grandchildren, Spencer Silar and Connor Silar, both of York; two aunts, Shirley Shafer of Dillsburg and Helen Bailey of Fallbrook, CA, and many cousins. Memorial contributions may be made to Mt. Zion Lutheran Church, 2164 Mt. Zion Rd, York, PA 17402. His family is deeply grateful for the compassionate and professional care by the staff of Hospice and Community Care and many thanks to the York Veterans Network.
