YORK- Barbara C. (Childress) Beck, 88, passed away Tuesday, May 17, 2016 at York Hospital. She was the wife of the late Dean O. Beck to whom she was married for 52 years, prior to his death in 2009. A Celebration of Life tribute service will be held at Noon on Friday, May 27, 2016 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 839 West Market Street, York, with her Pastor, The Reverend Kevin T. Shively officiating. A viewing will be held from 10AM to Noon, prior to the service. Burial will be in Susquehanna Memorial Gardens. Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Road, York, is in charge of arrangements. Born March 28, 1928 in York, Barbara was a daughter of the late Guy S. and Catharine A. (McCallum) Childress. Barbara was a 1943 graduate of York High School and a 1955 graduate of Millersville University. She was a proud member of the Beta Sigma Phi Millersville University chapter. She went on to teach in York City for 18 years providing a special opportunity to her students by being one of the only teachers with a piano in her classroom. Mrs. Beck was a lifetime member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church, the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary and the American Ex-POW’s. She was also a member of the Ladies Auxiliary York City Paid Firefighters, VFW Post 8896 Ladies Auxiliary, American Legion Post 791 Auxiliary, and the York Chapter of the PA Association of School Retirees. Mrs. Beck is survived by two sons, Michael D. Beck and wife Kathi of York and Guy C. Beck and wife Annette of Windsor; two daughters, Rebecca L. Grim of Red Lion and Karen S. Hale and her partner Jeffrey Basehore of Mechanicsburg; eight grandchildren, Morgan and Casey Grim of Red Lion, Anthony Beck of Dover, Kristen Myers of Dover, Jonathan Forrester of Mechanicsburg, Ian and Benjamin Propst of Windsor and Alan Hale of York, and a great granddaughter, Kaydence Forrester of Harrisburg. In addition to her husband and parents, Barbara was preceded in death by two brothers, Theodore and Bruce Childress and a sister, Dorcus Childress. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 839 W. Market Street, York, PA 17401.
