Barbara Ann Voorstad

YORK- Barbara Ann (Buchele) Voorstad, 90, passed away Thursday, September 30, 2021 at York Hospital. She was the wife of the late Henri Theodoor Voorstad, MD. Barbara was born in Baltimore, MD on August 27, 1931, the daughter of the late Carl A. and Addie (Dorsey) Buchele. She spent her childhood in Dickeyville in Baltimore, giving her a lifetime of wonderful memories of ice skating on the frozen pond every winter. Barbara graduated from the Union Memorial School of Nursing as a registered nurse, working first in pediatrics and then as a partner with Henri in their private practice in Towson, MD for almost 30 years. Barbara and Henri lived in The Netherlands after they married in 1956 until 1965 where Henri was in the Dutch Navy. While in the Netherlands, Barbara became fluent in Dutch, had all four children and shared Henri’s love of Indonesian cuisine, learning how to prepare his favorite Indonesian dishes from his childhood. Upon returning to the United States, Barbara and Henri opened their medical practice and faithfully served their patients for almost 30 years. Barbara enjoyed travel and time with family, especially her nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren. She had a great love of animals, always had a cat, and simultaneously cared for the woodland creatures in the back yard as well as one injured “Carl the crow.” She was a very sweet, nurturing, kind person who took great care of her husband before his passing in 2008. She had a dry sense of humor and made those around her smile. Barbara leaves four children, P. Josée O’Shannessy and her husband, Daniel of Limerick, PA, Francine S. Graillot-Holman and her husband, Hugh of Harvard, MA, Nancy Marisa Maravi and her husband, Joseph of Clarksville, MD and Theodoor A. Voorstad and his wife, Carla, of Dover, PA; nine grandchildren, Paul, Phillip, Pieter, Sjoukje, Aurélie, Jennifer, Lilah, Jana, and Nicholas; and three great grandchildren, Logan, Noëlle, and Wilder. She was preceded in death by a brother, Dorsey Buchele. Services will be held privately at a later date.
