Avis Mary Dake

YORK - Avis Mary Dake, of Springettsbury Twp., died peacefully at 10:20 a.m. on Friday, October 2, 2009, at York Hospital. She was 79. A service to celebrate Avis's life will be 3 p.m. Thursday, October 8, 2009 at Salem United Church of Christ, 2705 West Canal Rd., Dover, PA. Viewing will be from 2 to 3 p.m. Thursday at the church and again on Saturday from noon to 1 p.m. at the Robert M. Halgas Funeral Home, 38 West Main St., Broadalbin, NY followed by a graveside service and burial in the Broadalbin-Mayfield Rural Cemetery. Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, 1551 Kenneth Rd., York, PA is in charge of arrangements. Avis was born August 4, 1930, in Broadalbin, Fulton County, NY. She was the daughter of the late Lewis H. and Dorothy E. (Whitworth) Dake. She was a 1948 graduate of the Broadalbin High School where she was a member of the school's cheer leading squad. Before moving to the York area, Avis worked at McCrory's Department Store in Gloversville, NY for 21 years serving as head cashier and store manager for 8 years. After moving to York, Avis accepted a position at Pleasant Acres Nursing Home where she was a seamstress in the Laundry Department retiring in 1993 after 14 years of service. She also worked part-time at Bon-Ton Department Store. Avis was a faithful and devoted member of Salem United Church of Christ in Dover. She also enjoyed square dancing and was a former member of the White Rose Center. She volunteered as a Senior Companion and was a member of the Viking Athletic Association. Avis is survived by her sister, Phyllis Mikucki of Norristown; her brother, Roger Dake of Amsterdam, NY; numerous nieces and nephews; and her best friend of 32 years, Goldie Keener of York. She was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Currey and two brothers, Walter Dake and Donald Dake.
