YORK - Arlene (Bowen) Peffer, 81, formerly of Anaheim, California, passed away Monday, April 27, 2009 at York Hospital. She was the wife of the late Philip B. Peffer. A celebration of life tribute service will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, May 2, 2009 in the Chapel at Normandie Ridge, 1700 Normandie Drive, York with her pastor, Chaplain Peter Seiler officiating. Private burial will be in Fairhaven Memorial Park, Orange, CA. Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Road, York is in charge of arrangements. Born December 24, 1927 in New Cumberland, a daughter of the late Arthur V. and Lillie (Kimmel) Bowen, she earned her Bachelor's Degree in Education from California State University at Fullerton and her M.Ed. from Pepperdine University. Mrs. Peffer began her teaching career in Mechanicsburg School District in the early 1940s and then spent the majority of her career teaching 5th and 6th grades in the Magnolia School District in Anaheim. She was a member of the American Assoc. of University Women, Natl. Education Assoc., and California Teachers Assoc., and she served as an officer for the Magnolia Educators Assoc. Mrs. Peffer viewed teaching as much more than a profession. She held a profound passion for her students and poured her heart and soul into touching many young lives. She was an active member of West Anaheim United Methodist Church. Mrs. Peffer is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Wesley S. and Joan Peffer of York, three grandchildren, Rachel K., Philip R., and Rebecca E. Peffer, and a sister, Velma Weaver of East Waterford, Juniata Co. She was preceded in death by a son, Frank E. Peffer, two sisters, Geraldine Whitner and Marion Fettro, and a brother, Ernest Bowen. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to American Heart Assoc., 140 Roosevelt Ave., Suite 208, York, PA 17401.
