Ardoth F. 'Ardie' (Becker) Gentzler, 74, died peacefully Thursday morning, September 18, 2008, at her home with family and friends at her side, after a courageous battle with ALS - Lou Gehrig's Disease. She was the wife of Vernon L. Gentzler, who died June 27, 2007, and to whom she had been married for 54 years. Following cremation, a visitation will be 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, September 23, 2008, at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 839 W. Market St., York, with a Celebration of Life Service beginning at 11 a.m. A light luncheon and additional time for sharing will be held immediately following the service in the church Fellowship Hall. Burial with a Dove Release Ceremony will then follow at Quickel's Cemetery. Officiating at the service will be her pastors, the Rev. Kevin T. Shively and the Rev. Richard E. Jorgensen, Jr. Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, 1551 Kenneth Rd., York is in charge of arrangements. Ardie was born November 29, 1933, in York, the daughter of the late Curvin E. and Sarah E. (Hoffman) Becker. She was a 1951 graduate of William Penn Senior High School and then attended nursing school at Bryn Mawr College near Philadelphia. As an LPN, she practiced nursing for many years with the offices of both Dr. Hamme in West York until his retirement and then later with Dr. Wampler until his retirement. She continued working on a part-time basis as a funeral hostess with Heffner Funeral Homes & Crematory until the time of her illness. She was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church. Ardie was gifted in the Arts and taught numerous craft classes in the York area during her lifetime. She also served as a Craft Judge at the York Fair for many years. Along with her late husband she enjoyed attending and participating in antique shows and auctions throughout the area. Ardie is survived by two daughters, Dr. Yvonne S. Gentzler of Ames, Iowa, and JoAnn D. Snow of York; daughter-in-law, Lori Gentzler Behler of York; six grandchildren, Sibyl E. Snow, Gregory A. Gentzler, II, Steven G. Gentzler, Britni J. Gentzler, Lauren E. Gentzler and Samantha C. Gentzler; a sister, Audrey V. Grove and husband, Glenn of York; nieces and nephews; and countless special friends. She was also preceded in death by two sons, Gregory A. Gentzler in 1988 and Scott E. Gentzler in 2000. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 839 W.
