SCRANTON- Anthony E. Clifford Jr., 83, of Scranton, formerly of Avoca, died Wednesday, October 24, 2007, at Mountain View Nursing Center, Scranton. Born in Avoca on June 22, 1924, he was the son of the late Anthony E. and Catherine (Garland) Clifford, Sr. He was a member of St. Mary's Church, Avoca and the American Legion Post 585, Duryea. He served in the Army Air Force during WWII. His plane was shot down on Friday, October 13th, 1944 and he became a Prisoner of War. He received various medals for his military service including the Purple Heart. After the war, Anthony went to work for the U.S. Post Office where he worked his way through the ranks. He started as a carrier and retired as the Post Master of Plymouth. He also worked in the Pittston and Duryea offices. He was preceded in death by; his sister, Anne Thomas, and two brothers, Joseph and James Clifford. He is survived by; his wife of 55 years, Doris L. (Turon) Clifford, two daughters, Susan Parrino and her husband, John, Old Forge, Antoinette Clifford, Pittston, a granddaughter, Chrissy Parrino, Harrisburg. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday at 11:00 AM from Kniffen O'Malley Funeral Home, Inc., 728 Main Street, Avoca, with Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 AM at St. Mary's Church, Avoca. Officiating will be Father Phillip Sladicka . Interment will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Carverton. Friends may call Friday evening from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
