Angela Langadinos Pandelidis

Angela Pandelidis ended her mortal journey on January 29th. She was born to Greek immigrant parents on April 4th, 1934. As had so many other Greek immigrants, Nicholas and Xeni Langadinos made a better life for their children in a new country. Her father toiled daily in a small lunch counter restaurant he owned. Angela lost a handicapped brother early in her life as well as a beloved sister, Christina Hajian a few decades later. At a time when women did not regularly pursue higher education, after graduating from York High, both sisters graduated from college with Angela succeeding as a proud graduate of the Temple University School of Pharmacy. She married Pandelis Kirk Pandelidis, a Greek immigrant psychiatrist in 1957. With her charm, she helped him navigate a new country to succeed as a prosperous, well-respected physician. Her children have fond memories of being served a Cherry Coke by Mom at the soda fountain at Randolph Park Pharmacy when she took a break from filling a prescription. Eventually, she stepped away from her profession to foster the success of her own children. While Dad worked hard, she made sure that education was the primary focus for her children and that they were able to explore varied interests whether they be equestrian lessons (at Wagner horse farm), music lessons (piano, clarinet, flute, oboe, and voice) or athletics (swimming, lacrosse, golf, tennis, and diving). You can bet Dad wasn't shuttling the kids all over town. Still, every night, there was a family meal at 5:00 PM before Dad went off to evening office hours. Sons, Nicholas and Steven became doctors, Joyce became a chemical engineer, and Kathy became a lawyer. Angela's unceasing love extended to her niece and Godchild Eleanore Hajian, a research analyst. Angela treated her niece as a third daughter. Her family grew as she welcomed Jim St. John (husband of Joyce), Lisa (wife of Nick), Julie (wife of Steve) and Mike Granbois (husband of Kathy). She and Kirk were blessed with 13 grandchildren (Matthew, Katy, Tina, Thea, Allie, Alex, Nick, Stevie, Jason, Teddy, Luke, Sophie, and Kirk), and seven great grandchildren. Angela was at home surrounded by loving family and caregivers in her final days. The challenges of the pandemic did not deprive her of the love of her family as she did the math, and refused to deny herself the joy of her family's companionship over the last year. Thankfully, Covid left her alone. Despite an accumulation of infirmities, Angela, with the imaginative and tireless help of daughter Joyce, maintained her mobility and her residence in the family homestead. In later years, Angela embraced technology, relentlessly Face Timing her children and grandchildren until they were forced to answer. When she could no longer exercise her mind by going out to play bridge, she would read voraciously and challenge her daughters, daughters-in-law, and grandchildren on Words with Friends. Angela (a.k.a. Mom, Mamma, Aunt Angie, Yiayia, and YiayiaYiaya, and Mrs. Pandelidis will be missed by family, friends and her capable caregivers (including those from Heartland Hospice). She is also survived by cousins Eleni Giannakakis, Ioanna and George Melas, Sister-in-law Katina Maglaris, brother-in-law Niko Pandelidis, and Niece Eliza Bougouris, all of Athens, Greece. When her health allowed, Mom faithfully attended the Annunciation Greek Orthodox church as well as St. John Chrysostom Antiochian church. Donations can be made to either church in her memory. A viewing observing Covid guidelines will be held from 9:00 to 11:00 AM Friday, February 5, 2021 at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 2500 Pine Grove Rd., York, PA 17403.
