YORK, PA – Andrew William Duarte, a West York Borough Police Patrolman tragically lost his life in the line of duty on Saturday, February 22, 2025, at the age of 30. Andrew dedicated his life serving and protecting the public. He is a hero to both his family and community.
Born February 17, 1995 in Oakland, CA; a son of Nancy J. (Underhill) Duarte Matarese and her husband David E. Matarese and Gary W. Duarte and his wife Thelma Valdez; Andrew was a 2013 graduate of Berean Christian High School, Walnut Creek, CA and graduated Summa Cum Laude in 2016 from California University of Pennsylvania with a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice/Police Science. His first position as a police officer was as a seasonal officer with the Ocean City, MD Police Dept. during the Summer of 2016. Andrew then took his talents to the Denver, Colorado Police Department where he worked from 2017 to 2022. While at the Denver Police Dept., he graduated first in his class as a Drug Recognition Expert and holds the highest test score recorded in the nationally recognized class. At the time, Andrew was the youngest police officer to achieve the DRE certification in the State of Colorado. In 2021 Officer Duarte was recognized as Mothers Against Drunk Driving Colorado Hero of the Year for his dedication and enforcement of impaired driving. Patrolman Duarte has spent the past three years protecting the West York community with the West York Borough Police Department. Outside of work, Andrew enjoyed photography, playing his guitar, hiking, traveling, and most importantly spending time with his family.
In addition to his parents, Andrew is survived by his girlfriend, Susanna Dutton; an aunt, Claire and husband Kevin Brady; and cousins, Alex and wife Shayla Brady and Audrey Brady all of Montana.
A Service to Celebrate Andrew’s dedication to our community will be held at 1:00 PM Friday, February 28, 2025 at Living Word Community Church, 2530 Cape Horn Rd., Red Lion. Private burial will be in Susquehanna Memorial Gardens. Olewiler & Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 35 Gotham Place, Red Lion is in charge of arrangements. Patrolman Duarte’s Tribute Service will be webcast at www.youtube.com/@LWCCyork.
