Alverna M. (Fehrman) Dewald

POTTSVILLE - Alverna M. DeWald, 89, of Pottsville, died Monday afternoon at the White Owl Manor, Mahonoy City. Born in Pottsville on March 26, 1918, she was a daughter of the late Herman and Maud Mostella Fehrman. She was a 1936 graduate of Pottsville High School. She was married to the late Robert C. DeWald. Until retiring, she was employed by ACME markets as a clerk and as a teacher in the Pottsville Mission Day Care. She was a member of the United Presbyterian Church, Pottsville, where she was a Sunday school teacher, an Elder and on the board of trustees. Alverna was active in the senior Olympics, where she won many medals. She also volunteered for 25 years at the former Leader Nursing Home. Surviving Alverna are: two sons, Edward H., and his wife Jean Bieski, of Pottsville and Bernard J. and his wife Dot, of Berks county; five grandchildren; seven great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Madelaine Smith and Evelyn Lynch. Funeral services will be held on Friday at 10:00 AM from the Schlitzer Allen Pugh Funeral Home, Inc. 6th & W. Market St., Pottsville. The Reverends Susan Reichenberg and Elmer Davis will officiate. Interment will be in Schuylkill Memorial Park. The family requests contributions be made to the SPCA, PO Box 233, Pottsville, PA 17901.
