Allen Hayes Root

YORK - Allen Hayes Root, 83, passed away Tuesday, May 11, 2010. Born on July 26, 1926 in Sharon, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Allen H. Root and Marie R. (McDonald) Root. He was the husband of Elaine L. (Broadbelt) Root, to whom he was married for 51 years on November 22, 2009. In addition to his wife, Mr. Root is survived by a daughter, Kathleen A. and husband Steven D. Cassel of York; a son, Allen H. Root, III of York; and four grandchildren, Eric A. and John B. Cassel and Brianna M. and Alana E. Root. He was a United States Army veteran of World War II serving in the 100th Infantry Division Fox Company 398th. He worked for the Western Maryland Railway (now CSX) from 1942 until he retired at the age of 58. He moved from Cleveland, Ohio to Reading, PA and then transferred to York to manage the local freight office and operations, located adjacent Sovereign stadium. Mr. Root was a member of National Rifle Association, Dallastown American Legion, and was a former member of the Lafayette and Rotary Clubs. A viewing will be held from 10:00-11:00 AM Friday, May 14, 2010 at Advent Lutheran Church, 1775 East Market Street. A celebration of life tribute service will follow at 11:00 AM with Pastor David L. Ritterpusch officiating. Burial will be in Mount Rose Cemetery with full military rites provided by the Dallastown American Legion Honor Guard. Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Road, York is in charge of arrangements.
