Alfred 'Al' Solter

Dover Alfred 'Al' Solter, 91, went home to be with our Lord, June 2, 2014 at York Hospital. He was the devoted and loving husband of the late Lillian B. (Ronnback) Solter who died August 15, 2012 and with whom he shared 63 years of marriage. Al was a patient mentor and hands-on teacher with his children, inspiring them even into adulthood. Following cremation, family and friends are invited to visit and share memories of Mr. Solter’s life between 4:00 and 7:00 pm on Friday, June 6, 2014 at 4051 Carlisle Rd., Dover. Interment of Mr. and Mrs. Solter’s remains will be at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville at a later date. Alfred was born July 12, 1922, in Brooklyn, NY. He was the son of the late Henry and Anna (Wagner) Solter. He was a US Army veteran of World War II serving in Central Burma and India. He earned his engineering degree from Pratt Institute and became a professional engineer in the state of California. Working within the Industry of Aerospace he was heavily involved in the Gemini and Apollo Projects, which resulted in putting the first man on the moon. Later, he worked in the nuclear industry prior to his retirement. He was a stamp collector and enjoyed gardening, but absolutely loved to play golf at every opportunity. He was a member of the Heritage Senior Center in Dover and participated in the Senior Games, winning four medals at age 90. Alfred showed his love for animals by volunteering at the York County SPCA. Al really just enjoyed life and always had a smile on his face. He was a gentle man with a magnetic personality and made friends everywhere he went. We know he’s catching up with family members in Heaven now, but he is greatly loved and will be missed by his family and friends here on earth. Mr. Solter is survived by his two sons, Alfred M. Solter and his wife, Ruth of Red Lion, Robert C. Solter and his wife, Marie of Longmont, CO; two daughters, Anne E. Solter of Dover and Carole L. Wells and her husband, Chris of Emporia, KS; 14 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Henry and Frederick Solter and his sister, Elizabeth Daubel. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Heritage Senior Center, 3700 Davidsburg Rd, Dover, PA 17315 or York County SPCA, 3159 N Susquehanna Trail, York, PA 17406.
