YORK- Albert A. (Bud) Cooney, 83, died on Monday, February 2, 2015 at his residence. He was the husband of Yolanda Cooney and the husband of the late Joan K. Cooney who died on September 1st 2013 and to whom he was married 58 years. A funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, February 6, 2015 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 309 S. George St., York with Fr. Jonathan Sawicki officiating. Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Rd., York is in charge of arrangements. A celebration of life service will be held at Heidelberg United Church of Christ at a later date. Born on October 25, 1931 in Baltimore, he was a son of the late Albert J. and Mary L. (Palmisano) Cooney. Albert was a director of building and grounds for Howard Hughes Medical Institute in Bethesda until his retirement. Prior to that, he held similar positions at both York College of Pennsylvania and Penn State York. He was also a former Baltimore City Police Officer. Mr. Cooney was an active member of Heidelberg United Church of Christ and Sunday School and accompanied his wife to St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Albert was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed painting, sculpting and gardening and was a champion marksman. Mr. Cooney served our country in the U.S. Naval Reserves from 1946-49 and the U.S. Army during the Korean War from 1951-54. He was selected to be a member of the Honor Guard in Japan under General Mark Clark. Along with his wife, Yolanda, Albert is survived by one daughter, Lory A. Powers and her husband, Dan of York; one granddaughter, Genevieve Powers; two sisters, Shirley Belz of Baltimore and Mary Little and her husband, Virgil of Baltimore; sisters-in-law Jane Leidig of Baltimore and Helen Hardesty of Great Falls, MT; Brothers-in-law Richard Schmidt of Baltimore, Robert Schmidt and his wife Maria of Baltimore and William Schmidt of Baltimore; many nieces, nephews and wonderful friends.
