Adele S. (Sowle) Mccreary

YORK- Adele Sowle McCreary, 99, died on Wednesday, July 25. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald E. McCreary, to whom she was married for 24 years; her husbands Thomas H. Elicker and Walter A. Stauffer, and a sister, Beverly Sowle Grenier. Mrs. McCreary was born May 19, 1919, in Emigsville, the daughter of William D. and Louise S. Brillinger Sowle. She lived in Baltimore and attended Baltimore Public Schools in her early years before moving to York. After graduation from William Penn Senior High School in 1936, she worked at American Chain and Cable until 1942. She was a fulltime homemaker for many years. She later retired from Martin Memorial Library after 21 years working as a clerk in the children's library. She was a lifelong member of Trinity United Church of Christ, York, a past member of the York Hiking Club and the J.C.C. Tuesday Club. She moved to Country Meadows assisted living facility in 2013 and was an active participant in the community there. She leaves two daughters, Nancy Elicker Zavisch, Reseda, California, and Jane Elicker Dodson , York , and her son-in-law, Nelson Dodson; grandsons Alex Dodson and Neal Dodson and his wife Ashley; six great-grandsons; and nieces and nephews. She also leaves three step-children, Patrick McCreary and his wife Connie, Dawn Lutz and her husband John, and David McCreary; step-grandsons, Michael and Andrew Lutz, and five step great-grandchildren. Service arrangements are incomplete at this time. Burial will be at Prospect Hill Cemetery. Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Rd., York is in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to Martin Memorial Library, 159 E. Market St, York 17401 , or The York Hiking Club, c / o Bernard Frick , 168 Springdale Rd., York 17403.
