YORK - Ronald J. "RJ" Mehring, 53, passed away peacefully with his friends and family by his side on the morning of Tuesday, December 4, 2007 at Cancer Treatment Centers of America in Philadelphia. He fought a courageous two month battle with cancer. A memorial service will be held at 12:00 Noon Saturday, December 8, 2007 in Memorial Hall at the York Expo Center. A visitation will begin at 11:00 AM Saturday and there will also be refreshments and a gathering time following the service in Memorial Hall. Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Road, York is in charge of arrangements. Born January 10, 1954 in Gettysburg, a son of Edward and Betty Mehring of York, he was a 1971 graduate of Central York High School. He attended Catawba College in North Carolina and graduated from York College in 1975 with a Bachelor of Science Degree. RJ was a Sergeant for the York City Police Department, where he worked for more than 29 years. He was part of the motorcycle patrol unit and had received several awards during his career. He was president of The Renegade Pigs of York; a member of the 13th Ward Political Club; an active member of the F.O.P.; and was a member of Free and Accepted Masons, Zeredetha Lodge #451, and a 32nd Degree Mason with Harrisburg Consistory. RJ was an avid Harley rider and owner. He had a passion for building motorcycles and for encouraging others to find a passion for riding too. He also loved vacationing with his family and friends and had planned to retire and live by the beaches of the Carolina's. In addition to his parents, Ron is survived by his two children, Judstn Mehring and Nicole Mehring both of York; two grandchildren, Dylan and Ethan to whom he was a wonderful "Poppy"; a brother, Craig Mehring and sister Kimberly Walker, and their children, all of York. He also leaves behind his cherished companion of several years Tina Groff and her daughter Nikka. Additionally, RJ had a great number of loyal friends who will sadly miss him, including his dear friend, Cindy Hooper who stayed by his side until the end. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Cancer Treatment Center of America, 1331 E.
