Dover—Rita A. (Sheffer) Erney, 85, passed away Saturday, March 25, 2017 at Manor Care Health Services—North. She was the wife of the late Marlin L. Erney. A Celebration of Life Service will be 10AM Saturday, April 1, 2017 at Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Rd, York. Officiating the service will be her pastor’s, the Rev. Dr. Michael Brossman and Rev. Roland Garvin. A viewing will be held from 9-10AM, Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be held in Suburban Memorial Gardens with full military honors provided by the York County Veterans Guard. Born April 19, 1931 in York, she was a daughter of the late Harold G. and Ida A. (Bupp) Sheffer. She graduated from York High School. Following graduation she entered the United States Army and attended Adjutant General’s Course at Ft. Lee, VA, where she earned the rank of Corporal. She proudly served in Japan as a postal clerk during the Korean War. She worked many jobs through her life and touched many people, none more important than the time she spent as a homemaker for her family. Rita was also a York City Police Officer, one of the first 5 women hired by York City’s Police Department. She was also in the Antique Business for 40 years. Mrs. Erney is survived by one son, Collin M. Erney and wife, Lisa of Dover; one daughter, Kelly Jean Conaway and husband, Col. James Conaway of Prattville, AL; four grandchildren, Zachary J. Conaway and wife, Erica, Bryn-Marc A. Conaway and wife, Allison, Kathryn D. Erney and Tyson G. Erney; two great grandchildren, Meredith and Miles Conaway; three sisters, Flo A. Euculano of York, Cheryl Clouser of New Cumberland and Marilyn Moore of Middletown and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister, Jeanne Newcomer and her husband, Merle; two brothers, William and Gerald Sheffer and two nephews, Keith and Kevin Newcomer.
