Richard H. Baldwin

SPRING GARDEN TOWNSHIP- Richard H. Baldwin, 96, of York, died Saturday, February 7, 2009 at Country Meadows at Leader Heights. He was the husband of Mary "Betty" (nee Shaub) Baldwin. The service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, February 11, 2009 at Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Rd. in York. Full military honors will be rendered by York County Veteran's Honor Guard at the start of the service. His pastor, The Reverend Dr. Charles W. Salisbury will be officiating at the service. Viewings will be from 7-9p.m. on Tuesday and 10-11 a.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be private in Geisey Cemetery in Shrewsbury. Mr. Baldwin was the son of the late Justus H. and Laura M. (nee Connor) Baldwin. He was born on November 2, 1912 in Johnstown where he was raised. He was a 1930 graduate of Johnstown High School, where he was a Violinist in the String Quartet. He Matriculated at Shenandoah College and Conservatory of Music and entered Lebanon Valley College to earn his Bachelor's Degree in History and Social Studies in 1940. He then received his Master's Degree from the University of Pittsburgh in 1951. In 1947 he began his teaching career in the Red Lion School District, as a Junior High School History Teacher, where he met his future wife, Betty Shaub. In 1952 Richard and Betty entered a marriage that lasted 56 years. He retired from his teaching career in 1973. Richard served four years in the US Army Air Corps. as a Radar Operator in the 64th Fighter Wing in the European Theater during WWII. Mr. Baldwin was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Red Lion, where he served as Sunday School Superintendant for a number of years. He served as Secretary and President of the Red Lion Lions Club and as Governor of District 14-C of Pennsylvania Lions Clubs for the year 1979-80. He was president of: Bonaire Country Club, Cotillion Club, University Club, and York County Chapter of PA Association of School Retirees. He was also President of the Reuniting Members of the 64th Fighter Wing. Along with his wife, Mr. Baldwin leaves, a Cousin Gale Connor and his wife Katherine; two nieces: Sallie (nee Harris) Lang and Betty Jane (nee Harris) Williams. A sister, Kathryn (nee Baldwin) Harris had preceded him in death. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 45 First Ave., Red Lion, PA 17356.
