YORK – When Keith A. Smith, 52, passed away Sunday, December 12, 2021, at UPMC Memorial Hospital, the world lost a genuine force for good, the community of York, PA, lost a supporter, mentor, and good citizen, his family lost their beloved son/brother/relative, and his wife and sons lost the most important person in their collective lives. Keith was the husband of Darla Smith with whom he celebrated 24 years of marriage in June 2021. A Celebration of Life Tribute Service will be held at 3:00 PM Monday, December 27, 2021 at Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Road, York with a family friend officiating. A visitation will be held from 1-3:00 PM Monday at the Funeral Chapel. Keith’s Tribute Service will be webcast and links will be shared with friends and family privately. Born October 30, 1969, in Hanover, a son of Raymond and Rose Smith; he was a 1987 graduate of Gettysburg High School and a 1992 graduate of Penn State University College of Engineering. Mr. Smith was a structural engineer and served as Vice President at Providence Engineering Corporation where he worked for the past 18 years. Keith was a member of numerous engineering societies and enjoyed volunteering with Rotary Club in York. He supported local efforts to foster engineering and math skills within the school districts of York. He always mentored his fellow employees. In the words of one co-worker, “…he made me find the answer on my own, so I could learn.” Keith loved woodworking and could design, build, or fix anything. His family never endured broken pipes or malfunctioning electronics. The standard answer in the Smith household has always been, “Take it to Daddy. He’ll fix it and make it right.” Keith enjoyed skiing, playing volleyball, completing puzzles, attending Penn State football games, and along with his family was a huge Star Wars fan. Admittedly, he preferred the original, pre-Disney Star Wars movies and rejected anything that was non-canon (along with the majority of society). Keith will be remembered as a good Christian who cherished his Bible study and opportunity for reflection, actively sought out ways to help others, and supported many worthy causes with his time and monetary donations. In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Smith is survived by two sons, Carter and Zachary Smith both of York; a sister, Cheryl and husband William, and their daughters; his mother and father-in-law, Tim and Beth Warkentin; his sister-in-law, Angela Strange and her daughter Abby Strange; along with numerous beloved cousins and extended family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions should be made in Keith’s memory to The Children’s Home of York, 77 Shoe House Road, York, PA 17406 or at www.childrenshomeofyork.org Keith’s extraordinary life of love and service can benefit children and families in need of help.
