ABBOTTSTOWN – Gordon D. Pickering, 69, passed away Friday, December 8, 2023 at York North Skilled Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. He was the husband of Michele (Edison) Warren to whom he was married on October 29, 2022.


A Memorial Service will take place 11:00 AM Saturday, January 13, 2024 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, 10 Delp Rd., Lancaster, PA with Rev. Joe Varsanyi presiding and Rev. Beth Lockard preaching. There will be a luncheon following for family and friends at the church in the Family Life Center Hall.


Born December 29, 1953 in Hanford, California, he was a son of Sandra R. (Richie) Pickering and the late Rev. Dr. Roger A. Pickering. Later on, Gordon’s family moved to Philadelphia for his father’s offer to serve for All Souls' Episcopal Church for the Deaf in Philadelphia. Gordon moved to Maryland, where he resided for over forty years, and finally moved to Abbottstown, PA with his beloved wife, Michele, and her children.


Mr. Pickering graduated middle school from Pennsylvania School for the Deaf (PSD) in Philadelphia in 1971. He then graduated high school from Model Secondary School for the Deaf in Washington, DC with the class of 1974. Mr. Pickering attended college at National Technical Institute for the Deaf in Rochester, New York where he graduated with an Applied Associate’s of Science in Architecture. Furthermore, he enrolled at Gallaudet University in Washington, DC and graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science in Business Administration. Finally, he enrolled at The University of Maryland for professional training classes.


Gordon was a Budget Analyst at General Services Administration for over 39 years, retiring in January of 2023. Outside of his work, his personal focus mission was to support numerous deaf community clubs in Washington, DC and Maryland. He was an advocator for deaf rights and human rights activities. In his free time, he loved to travel, travelling to 43 countries, skiing, X-Cross skiing, hiking, camping, sailing boats and snowshoeing trails.


In addition to his beloved wife, Michele, he is survived by three step-children, Phil Pryor, Nicole Pryor and Karl Warren; his mother, Sandra Pickering; and a sister, Kristen Houseknecht and her husband Wayne. He is preceded in death by his father, Rev. Dr. Roger A. Pickering.
