Elwood C. "Woody" Spangler

YORK- Elwood C. “Woody” Spangler, 79, entered into rest in God’s loving arms on Sunday, September 20, 2015 at Rest Haven Rehabilitation & Nursing Center. He was the loving husband of Joann (Diehl) Spangler for 63 years. Woody was born in York on June 18, 1936 to the late Dorothy (Naylor) and Clyde Spangler. Woody worked at York International as Manager of Publications for 44 years until his retirement in 1996. He was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church for many years and attended the Living Word Community Church for the past five years. Woody’s zest for life was amazing and he always gave 110 percent. He graduated from York High School in 1954; attended Gettysburg College; and graduated from York College. Woody was a member of Sports Car Club of York. He owned and operated Imported Auto Parts of York from 1971 to 1979. Woody and Joann loved their German heritage. He was a member of German American Society of York-Alpenrose where he served as president for six years. Woody and Joann danced with York Oberbayern Volkstanzgruppe for many years and were members of White Rose Polka Dancers Association. Their love of travel took Woody and Joann on 13 trips to Europe and Asia with the PA Ambassadors of Music. They traveled on a 4-month round-the-world cruise in 2013 and made many trips to Germany from 1976 to present. In total they visited 98 countries. Woody was also an avid tennis player. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Krista Stambaugh and her husband Jim of York and Karla Gannett and her husband Glenn of Kinston, NC; four grandchildren, Erika North and her husband Joe of York, Erin Stambaugh of West Chester, PA, Austin Gannett and his wife Amy of Fort Collins, CO, and Kamille Gannett of Kinston, NC; one brother, Leroy “Sparky” Spangler and his wife Cathy of York, PA; one sister, Victoria Sowers and her husband Rick of York, PA; and numerous nieces and nephews. A celebration of life tribute service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 26, 2015 at Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Rd., York, with Pastor Stephanie Sechrist officiating. A visitation will be held from 1-2 p.m. prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Alzheimer’s Association, Greater PA Chapter, 2595 Interstate Drive, Suite 100, Harrisburg, PA 17110.
