YORK - Betty J. (Garton) Woodend, 82, died Monday, November 2, 2009 at University of Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia. She was the loving wife of the late James W. "Woody" Woodend, to whom she was married to for 41 years. Funeral services will be private at the request of the family. Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Road, York, is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Woodend was born March 22, 1927 in Tillsonburg, ON, Canada a daughter of the late Joseph T. and Marjorie J. (Chesley) Garton. She was a member of the Lake Meade Homemakers. In her spare time, she volunteered at the York Welcome Wagon, Pleasant Acres Nursing Home, and Yorkview Nursing Home. She also taught local Cub Scouts, Sunday school, and was a 4-H Leader. Mrs. Woodend enjoyed traveling to Canada to visit her family; going to Mayberry Hill Farm in Ingersoll, ON; listening to the sound of the ocean at the shore; reading; dancing; taking walks; ice skating; and was an avid cross country skier when she was younger. She will be remembered by her family and friends as a loving, caring, positive person, with a great sense of humor. Mrs. Woodend leaves behind a son, James T. Woodend and wife, Sherry L. of Lancaster; four daughters, Kathy M. Woodend-Miller, Stefanie L. Lehr and husband, Geary E. all of East Berlin, Tracey L. Wright and husband, John T., and Nancy O. Bowders and husband, Jeremy D. all of York; 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; 2 brothers, Gerald and Gary Garton; a sister, Virginia Blank; sister-in-law, Midge Robinson; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Ted and Vance Garton; and a sister, Vicki Burgomaster. Memorial contributions may be made to S.P.C.A. or Leukemia Society of America.
